Dr. Jinpa

Dr. Jinpa is a practitioner of Traditional Tibetan Medicine. He provides thorough, compassionate consultation and appropriate therapies according to the needs and wants of his patients.

He began his studies as a monk at Mura Samtem Chökur Ling, a Nyingma monastery in Machu, Amdo, Tibet. As a monk, he was a devoted student. Under the guidance of his monastery’s highest khenpo, who instructed the monks in both academics and meditation, Jinpa received a rigorous education in Buddhist philosophy and contemplative practice. He also memorized the three shorter medical tantras that form the basis of Tibetan medical theory. He studied these together with astrology, which are traditional complements to each other.

When Jinpa was 18 he left Tibet and arrived in India a year later. While living in Dharamala, India, Jinpa studied in an intensive apprenticeship under Dr. Tenzin Thaye, the current personal physician of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and head of the Pharmaceutical Department of the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute, or Men-Tsee-Khang. For three years, Dr. Thaye instructed Jinpa closely, especially focusing on the external therapies; acupuncture, moxabustion, and cupping. With two other physicians, Dr. Sinthar and Dr. Pema Dorje, he focused on the subtleties of pulse diagnosis, urinalysis, medical potencies and prescription. Jinpa’s primary teachers rigorously tested his competency and authorized him to begin practicing on his own in 2013.
