A wise man named Hippocrates once said, “A doctor who isn’t skilled in astrology doesn’t deserve to be called a doctor.” While such a concept may sound foreign to modern sensibilities, the measurement of elemental and planetary energies is central to virtually all forms of traditional medicine. Described as a kind of astral technology, astrology is used in typological classification, etymology, treatment, and prognostication in ancient Tibetan, Ayurvedic, Taoist, and Greek traditions, among many others. In the Himalayas, all doctors are traditionally expected to also be at least amateur astrologers, and likewise all astrologers are expected to be well versed in the medical sciences.
In Tibet, three primary streams of astrology can be identified – a tradition coming from China (known as jungtsi, or elemental astrology), a tradition coming from India (known as kartsi, or Indian astrology), and an ancestral Tibetan tradition with roots in ancient Tibet and the lost kingdom of Shang Shung. Other notable influences include the western tradition of Tycho Brahe, whose calculations for measuring solstices and equinoxes were absorbed into Tibetan tradition under the 5th Dalai Lama.
In Astrology I, Tibetan Medicine Practitioner and Traditional Astrologer Erik Jampa Andersson will introduce the foundational concepts and processes in Tibetan Astrology, with special focus paid to the elemental astrological system of jungtsi. Participants will learn essential methods of calculation, including the following:
Life-force
Bodily strength
Personal power and fortune
Luck and societal perceptions
Nine magic squares (mewa), used for typological analysis and yearly prognostication.
Trigram calculation according to Tibetan tradition, essential for prescriptive geomancy and locating positive and negative energies.
Participants who complete this level, along with 21 natal charts, will be able to continue on to Tibetan Astrology II, which features more complex chart calculations and a deeper look at interpretation and analysis techniques.
This is a rare opportunity to study Traditional Tibetan Astrology in a straightforward, accessible way from a real active practitioner.
