Join special guests Menpa Palnam and Lilly Atlihan of Ösel Tibetan Healing and Meditation in New York for teachings on how to bring adversity to the path.
In this session we will be looking at aphorisms from the Lo Jong tradition about befriending adversity, and take a close look at the contemplation of the Four Immeasurables through that lens. The Four Immeasurables are found in some form in virtually every Buddhist text and teaching, but are often glossed over. These teachings are deeply relevant regardless of faith background, and especially important for those working in the healing arts. We will do several guided mediations, learning simple techniques to prime the mind for resilience in challenging times. There will be time for questions.
About our teachers:
Founders of Ösel Tibetan Healing and Meditation in New York
‘Menpa’ Palnam (the Tibetan term for traditional medicine doctors) provides thorough, compassionate consultation and appropriate therapies according to the needs and wants of his patients. He began his studies as a monk at Mura Samtem Chökur Ling, a Nyingma monastery in Machu, Amdo, Tibet. As a monk, he was a devoted student. Under the guidance of his monastery’s highest khenpo, who instructed the monks in both academics and meditation, Palnam received a rigorous education in Buddhist philosophy and contemplative practice. When Palnam was 18 he left Tibet and arrived in India a year later. While living in Dharamala, India, Palnam studied in an intensive apprenticeship under Menpa Tenzin Thaye, the current personal physician of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and head of the Pharmaceutical Department of the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute, or Men-Tsee-Khang. For three years, Menpa Thaye instructed Palnam closely, especially focusing on the external therapies; acupuncture, moxabustion, and cupping. With two other physicians, Menpa Sinthar and Menpa Pema Dorje, he focused on the subtleties of pulse diagnosis, urinalysis, medical potencies and prescription. Palnam’s primary teachers rigorously tested his competency and authorized Menpa Palnam to begin practicing on his own in 2013.
Lillianne Atlihan is a skilled translator, dedicated practitioner and compassionate care provider, Lillianne co-teaches workshops, facilitates consultations, and manages OSEL partnerships and daily operations. As Menpa Palnam's translator and patient care facilitator, her fluent Tibetan is complemented by her own studies in Tibetan medicine. She provides both precise, accurate linguistic translation and also cultural translation, bridging gaps in how Western and Eastern views of medicine and the body effect how patients and practitioners understand conditions, treatments and wellness. Lillianne began studying Tibetan language at the University of Virginia in 2011, initially for the sake of studying Buddhism. She continued on to Naropa University and the Tsadra Research Library before moving Dharamsala, India, to study in immersion for three years at Esukhia language school. She began working with Menpa Palnam in 2014, and they moved to the US together in 2016. Upon moving back to NY, Lillianne began a Masters in Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine, studying acupuncture and Chinese herbs, and is currently completing her clinical internship. Lillianne believes in using all available methods to support healing and transformation, and is especially committed to the flourishing of Tibetan Medicine.
